Sweden, Information about the political prisoners in Gothenburg

Here comes some information about the political prisoners in Gothenburg. During the EU-meeting 51 people were arrested. One was a mistake and released a week later after the polisen had discovered the mistake. Some people has been released with out charge since then and some off them are still suspects. 6 people has been declared innocent by the court, 1 convicted for having hashish is his apartment instead of the riot charge since the court found him innocent of that, 23 people has been found guilty of rioting and the sentences has been from 8 month to four years. The most common has been around one year. Two persons has been sentence to 2.5 years and one to 4. This people has been accused of being leaders of the riots. 8 people are still in prison waiting for the trials to begin and will have to wait until the end of Aug. Most will complain to an higher court. The person that got shot are now feeling fine and are working with us in our office. He will be prosecuted but no date has been decided.

The 16 people still in prison here are having a hard time since they are under restrictions. Five are from other countries, one English, one Norwegian/Italian and three Germans. The group of 8 Swedes are rather young and are getting tired of the imprisonment. Most people claims that they have been treated well by the prison guard. A few have been beaten by the the police in prison but most haven´t. The biggest problem has been with food since most people has been vegetarians or vegans and the guard didn´t have anyone to cook for them until the second week. Vistors are mostly not aloud if they aren´t relatives but this is normal in Sweden. It takes a letter a week to be delivered but most letters will get to them. They can also send letters to people on the outside so you can send them your adress if you write to them. Remember, the police reads the letters so don´t write anything stupid.

Allot of people are complaining to the government and police about the treatment they have received during the EU-meeting and we included the address to the different places to send your complain. The address to the solidaritygroup is also in this letter. We bring the prisoners letters, money, papers, books and small stuff almost everyday and if you want you can send us post and we will distribute it to the prisoner. We are also raising money for legalwork and if you want to send us money to number is also here.

This solidaritygroup was hastily put together before the EU-meeting and was then only two people but during the weekend of riots four more people joined the group. Since then some people has left the group and others have joined. Most of us has been working with this for the last two month and will still keep working as long we have friends in jail. There is also solidaritygroups in Malmoe and Stockholm that are working with us. The solidaritygroup has decided not the speak with the press for the reason that we are not an informationdesk nore will we give political speeches, other people likes this more then us so we let them do it.

Today the police informed that no investigations has started against the police. There are no policemen who have the time to work with the case for the moment. Please let them know what you think of this.

Free Artem

Free Artem Chlenov!

Artem Chlenov is a 32 year old ecologist from the city of Kasimov, member of Rainbow Keepers movement and International Socio-Ecological Union, imprisoned in the Swedish city of Gothenburg after protest actions against summit of European Union organized from 15th to 17th of June 2001. He is accuse of throwing a stone against a policeman - a crime which no-one saw him committing. Artem is known to be a peace-loving man who has never used any aggression.
What people saw instead was the extreme violence to which Swedish state turned in order to stop protests of groups like trade unions and environmental groups concerned of European Union's course of development to a new neo-liberal militaristic superstate. Most extreme action of police was shooting of a "Reclaim the city" carnival in the evening of Friday 15th of June. Three persons were wounded, one critically and it is still unknown will he survive or not. However this was only a peak of the violence during the week, which has led Swedish human rights and other concerned organizations to raise 20 complaints against violent behavior of the police. Series of police provocations started 14th of June when Swedish police surrounded Hvitfeldtska secondary housing peaceful protesters school with containers, armed with police horses, dogs and a helicopter. Police attacked people with horses and dogs, at least one demonstrator was bitten to face by a police dog.
During actions of the weekend, police continuously escalated violence by attacking demonstrators with dogs and horses unprovoked. Some non-uniformed police provocateurs destroyed private property in order to discredit demonstrators.
In Saturday 16th of June a group of masked police armed with submachineguns invaded another school in which people were staying, claiming to search "arms and terrorists" which they never found. Some demonstrators did involved themselves in fighting with police, but vast majority of the demonstrators were calm even when police behavior was endangering their lives. 25000 persons from all around the West and East-Europe came to Gothenburg to demonstrate against imperialistic and unequal policies of the European union. One target of the demonstrations was American president George Bush JR visiting Gothenburg, which has lately scrapped both Kyoto protocol against global warming and anti-ballistic missile treaty of 1972, declaring both a new cold war and a war against global environment.
Officials of the European Union are ready to go to the very extreme in order to create a new global superpower. Sweden, mostly known as an example of social peace, has adopted brutal strategies seen only in South after fall of the iron curtain. We, friends of Artem Chlenov call us to react to attack against of human rights in the European Union. We call to organize actions demanding freedom to Artem Chlenov and all other 40 persons arrested in Gothenburg in 1st of July all around CIS, in front of the Swedish consulates, and Swedish companies, such as IKEA. In Moscow, we will organize action 12.00 in Swedish embassy, Mosfilmovskaya street 60. Please also write to Swedish embassy, and demand freedom to Artem and stopping violence against protests of the people.
