Meeting of Scottish Anarchist Network 14/3/98 1 Practical Goals for S@N The following long and short term aims were agreed: * to produce a S@N leaflet based on the aims and principles agreed in a previous meeting. This would be worded in a suitable way to be accessible to people with little or no knowledge of anarchist politics. Micah agreed to take on the responsibility for producing this. * to co-ordinate events as much as possible in the future. Using the example of the successful tour by Lorenzo last year, it was suggested that other events could also be transferred between cities/towns in Scotland. An example given was that Edinburgh might be interested in holding a benefit for Corton Vale along the lines of the recent Glasgow event. * to share information between local groups. Local groups should attempt to keep the rest of Scotland informed about current struggles and events that they are involved with. * that a secretary be chosen to maintain a list of contacts for S@N. It was agreed that initially such a list would be maintained at ACE. 2 Magazine / Newsletter: It was agreed after discussion that another issue of the magazine would not be feasible in the near future, due to lack of funds and people. Regarding the S@N newsletter 'Solidarity', the following was agreed: * that the leading article would give an anarchist perspective on a current political or social debate which is prominent in the news. * dates for publication should be fixed so as not to coincide with Counter Information. It was agreed that we should aim to produce issues in January, May (in time for 1st May events if possible), and July. An issue could come out in November if there was sufficient material or if a significant event was taking place at that time. * that we should attempt to find other outlets for distribution such as links with other groups who would be prepared to include Solidarity in their mailouts. * that a contact address for Solidarity and publication dates should be included in the newsletter and that readers should be invited to submit material. 3) Anarchist Black Cross It was brought to the attention of the meeting that one of the members had all the material from Glasgow ABC but that currently there was no ABC activity. No one could suggest any immediate solution to this problem as it seemed that no one could take on the responsibility for running ABC activities. It was agreed that * an article on Corton Vale should be included in the next issue of Solidarity. * S@N should make prisoner support one of it's functions and that we should seek to make links of solidarity with existing prisoner support groups in Scotland, e.g. the campaign in support of prisoners in Corton Vale. 4) May Day in Bradford / event in Edinburgh The Mayday celebrations in Bradford were brought to the attention of the meeting. It was agreed that: * S@N members would attempt to go to Bradford for the Mayday weekend. * S@N would produce a document for circulation at Bradford outlining the history of S@N and its aims and principles. Simon and Micah agreed to produce this and to circulate it to S@N members before the end of April for approval. An event on May 1st was brought to the attention of the group. Email us for details. 5) Current Struggles / Issues A) New Deal The main points of the New Deal were outlined to the meeting. It was agreed: * to mount a campaign against the New Deal emphasising anarchist views on the work ethic and critical of New Labour's belief in getting everyone into a job regardless of suitability etc. * that posters would be prepared by the Edinburgh group and circulated to other groups. * that the possibility of creating stunts should be explored by individual groups. * that S@N members should attempt if possible to identify any problems with New Deal employers which could be the focus of a campaign, e.g. health and safety problems etc. * that 'Travel Dundee' might be targeted by some direct action due to their prominent role in the recent New Deal advertising campaign on TV. B) Student Fees The meeting was told about recent actions opposing student fees. It was pointed out that although the NUS are officially opposing fees, they are not opposing the abolition of the student grant. This is because the NUS are dominated by Labour party members. The importance of getting this message to next year's first year students was highlighted, as these will be the first cohort to be directly affected by fees. S@N members with involvement in universities could attempt to form groups or distribute literature highlighting the failure of NUS to represent students. it was agreed that a comment on the fees campaign could be included in the summer issue of Solidarity, i.e. just before the new first year students start. 6) S@N e-mail list. In response to one member's worries that the e-mail list was unaccountable, the meeting discussed the S@N e-mail list. It was agreed that: * two lists would be created, one consisting of a set number of agreed contacts in each location (one in Dundee, two in Edinburgh and two in Glasgow), the other being a publicly available list of contacts who are interested in anarchist activity in Scotland. The latter would be used to circulate information about current and future events as a supplementary source of information. * Simon would do the necessary administration immediately, and would mail all the addresses currently on the more general list to confirm that they were happy to be on a freely circulated list. * e-mail would not be used as an exclusive channel for communication and that members of the limited list would ensure that any information passed through this channel is passed on to the group in their local area. 7) British National Party It was brought to the attention of the meeting that the BNP have PO boxes in Dundee, Edinburgh and Dalkeith. --

Scottish anarchist network news-sheet - contributions invited. Deadline end of May
The Scottish anarchist conference in Glasgow on 30.8.97 agreed to publish a Scottish-wide news-sheet on a regular basis. We are bringing an issue out in time to give out copies at the annual Scottish anti racist march in Glasgow on 29 November.
So we need contributions, the earlier the better, deadline around mid november. We especially request people from beyond Edinburgh and Glasgow to send in news, short newsy articles of 40-100 words are just as valuable as longer ones. Write Edinburgh or Glasgow addresses .
The ACE premises are at 17 W. Montgomery Place, on the junction with Brunswick Rd.. If coming from city centre go down Leith Walk, then right at Montgomery St., then left at W. Montgomery Place. 15 mins walk from bus or train station (Waverley).
some ideas for provisional agenda:
Ring 0131 557 6242 to add items to agenda or if you need overnight accomodation. If you need a creche space please ring as early as possible as there is only one useable room in our premises and we will have to sort out a creche somewhere else nearby (though there is a kids playground next door). The ACE benefit gig starts around 9pm, finishes about 1am and is free. The Tap O'Lauriston is on Lauriston Place, near Tollcross, 10 minutes walk from West End of Princes St..
